A live wedding painter is an artist who attends your wedding, sets up an easel during the celebration, and paints a chosen moment from your day on canvas in real time. You take the finished painting home. Live wedding painting is exactly what it sounds like. Rather than commissioning a portrait from photographs after your wedding, the artist is physically present on the day, painting one scene as it happens in front of them.
It's a genuinely demanding discipline. The artist is working under time pressure, in changing light, in a room full of people, often while chatting to curious guests, which is why every painter on this platform is vetted on their portfolio before they can list. Each artist has their own approach, so the specifics vary, but the outline below covers what to expect.
Your artist arrives one to two hours before the moment you've chosen to capture, most commonly the first dance, the ceremony, or the first kiss. They set up in a spot agreed in advance, close enough to see the scene clearly but positioned so they never obstruct your guests' view or your photographer's shots. They block in the venue and background early, then paint the key figures live as the moment unfolds. Most artists paint for four to six hours across the event, and many finish the piece on-site so it can be revealed before the end of the night. Others take the canvas back to their studio for final detailing and ship it to you a few weeks later.
The result is a single original painting of your wedding, in the artist's own style, created in the room where it happened.
You decide this with your artist before the day. Most couples choose one of the following:
The first dance is the most popular choice, since the artist has the whole reception to complete it and the setting usually includes your guests, florals, and venue details in the background.
The ceremony captures the vows, the first kiss, or the walk back down the aisle. This gives the artist less finishing time on-site, so some complete these in the studio afterwards.
A composed scene combines elements that didn't happen at the same moment, such as the two of you in the foreground with specific family members placed among the guests. Because it's a painting rather than a photograph, the artist can include a grandparent who left early or even honor a loved one who has passed away.
Together you'll also agree the details that matter to you, whether that's your attire, the venue architecture, or particular people, so the artist knows exactly what the finished piece needs to include. Canvas sizes typically run from 16x20 inches up to 30x40 inches, and the size you choose affects both the price and how much detail the artist can include.
Live wedding painters in the US generally charge between $2,000 and $6,500, with most falling around the $3,500 mark. That typically covers a 16x20 inch canvas and four to six hours of painting on the day, with travel billed separately.
Five factors have the biggest impact on price: the artist's experience level, their location relative to your venue, the package you choose, the hours you book them for, and the canvas size. Experience is worth dwelling on. Live painting demands a high skill floor just to do at all, but artists with years of weddings behind them bring a level of quality and reliability that carries real added value, and their pricing reflects it. Because travel is often charged on top, a more established painter based near your venue can also work out cheaper than a lower-priced artist crossing several states. Many artists offer tiered packages to suit different wedding budgets, so a smaller canvas or shorter attendance can bring the price down without changing the artist.
Guest portraits are a separate service. These are quick individual sketches of your guests, usually charged at around $100 per hour, with a skilled artist producing four to six portraits an hour. Some painters also offer prints of the finished painting as gifts for your wedding party or guests. Every artist on this page shows their starting price upfront on their listing, so you can compare before you enquire.
They aren't competing with each other, and almost every couple who books a painter also has a photographer. But it's worth understanding the difference. A photograph records the moment exactly as it was. A painting interprets it. Your artist can adjust the composition, bring the venue's best features into frame, leave out the fire exit sign, and place people where the story works best. Photography documents your day comprehensively across hundreds of images. A live painting distills it into one piece that hangs on your wall.
There's also a difference in what happens during the reception. A painter at work is something most of your guests will never have seen before. The easel becomes a natural gathering point and conversation starter, and it keeps people engaged during the quieter stretches between the meal, speeches, and dancing. For a fuller picture of what the day looks like with an artist present, see our guide to the reasons to have a live wedding painter at your wedding.
Working through this platform, the process looks like this. Browse the artists above, compare their portfolios, styles, and starting prices, then send an enquiry through the listing of the artist you like. You'll discuss your date, venue, the moment you want captured, and any specific requests directly with the artist. Most offer a consultation before you commit anything, so you can be completely sure they understand your vision before a deposit changes hands. Once you're happy, the deposit secures your date and the balance is due closer to the wedding. All communication and payment stay on the platform, and every artist's reviews come from verified bookings.
One honest note on timing: established live wedding painters in the US book out 12 to 24 months in advance, and peak-season Saturdays go first. If your date is set, enquiring early costs nothing and protects your options.
Our American artists are organized by region: East Coast, West Coast, and Central USA. Most are willing to travel between regions, with travel costs quoted upfront in your conversation. Getting married abroad? Several of our UK and European artists also take on destination weddings.
We're actively growing our American artist community. If you're a professional live painter in the US, you can apply to join the platform and reach couples searching for exactly what you do.
