Caricature, live sketch or painted portrait: which do you want?

All three give your guests a picture of themselves to take home. They feel very different, so it's worth knowing which one you're picturing before you book.

Caricature. A quick, funny drawing that exaggerates features for laughs, usually in marker and often in just a few minutes. It's great fun at a casual party. We don't list caricature artists.

Live sketch. A quick drawing in pen, pencil or marker, often in a fashion-illustration style that focuses on outfits and line. It's fast and stylish, and guests get a simple drawing.

Painted guest portrait. A small portrait painted by hand, usually in watercolor, that looks like your guest. It takes a few minutes longer than a sketch, and the result is a finished piece of art guests are happy to frame. This is what every artist on this page offers.

Our US guest portrait artists

Each artist works a little differently. Some price by hours and some by guest count, so compare how many guests each package covers, not just the price.

Alexandra, Columbus, Ohio. Hand-painted 5×7 inch portraits, each taking about five to seven minutes. From $1,500 for four hours with 50 portraits guaranteed, or $2,000 for five hours with 100 portraits guaranteed, her most popular package. Portraits go home the same day, and a portrait of the two of you is included.

Bella, Metuchen, New Jersey. 5×7 inch watercolor portraits of guests on their own, as couples or in small groups, at around 12 guests an hour. From $2,000 for four hours and around 48 guests, or $3,000 for six hours and around 72 guests, plus a larger portrait of the two of you. Portraits she can't finish on the night are completed afterward and mailed.

Mabel, Peabody, Massachusetts. Watercolor portraits of guests on their own or as couples. From $2,500 for about four hours, or $3,200 for up to seven hours with a second artist and an assistant for bigger weddings. Portraits of the two of you and your immediate family are included, and unfinished portraits are completed and mailed.

Rachel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Detailed watercolor portraits, with every guest painted individually. Priced by guest count: from $2,500 for 60 to 100 guests, $2,875 for 100 to 130, and $3,400 for 130 to 160. You also get a framed portrait of the two of you, and anyone she doesn't reach on the night is painted afterward and mailed.

Melody, Los Angeles, California. Watercolor portraits in a fine-art style, booked by the hour with a four-hour minimum. Her larger packages can add a watercolor of your venue, painted before the wedding and displayed on the day. From [price to confirm].

Travel is quoted for your venue. All five artists travel across the US, so tell them where you're getting married in your first message.

How it works on the day

Before the day. Tell your artist your guest count and anyone you'd like painted first, such as your wedding party or grandparents.

Setup. Your artist arrives before your guests and sets up a small painting station. They need a table, a chair and good light, somewhere guests can find easily but away from the speakers and the bar line.

A quick photo. Guests stop by on their own, as a couple or with family. Your artist takes a quick reference photo, so nobody has to sit still, and guests go straight back to the party.

Painting through the evening. Your artist paints each portrait during cocktail hour and the reception. Guests often gather to watch, which makes it entertainment as well as a gift.

Taking portraits home. Finished portraits are displayed for guests to collect before the night ends. Most of our artists finish any remaining portraits afterward and mail them, so guests who missed out still get theirs.

Compared with a photo booth, guests take home an original painting instead of a print, and there's no line to wait in.
