A live wedding painter attends your wedding, sets up an easel during the celebration, and paints a chosen moment from your day on canvas in real time. From vineyard weddings in Napa to coastal ceremonies in Big Sur, we're carefully building a community of independent live wedding painters who work across the West Coast. We're at the start of building this roster and choosing artists with real care. If you have a date and a location in mind, get in touch and we'll help you find the right artist or keep you posted as our community grows.

Live wedding painting means the artist is physically at your wedding, painting one scene, usually the first dance or the ceremony, as it happens in front of them. You take home an original piece of art created in the room, or just as often out here, under the open sky, on the day. If you're new to the idea, our US live wedding painters page explains the whole process, from choosing your moment to what happens after the last brushstroke.
The short version for planning purposes: your artist arrives an hour or two before the chosen moment, paints for four to six hours across the event, and either reveals the finished canvas that night or completes final details in the studio and ships it to you.
California is the largest single wedding market in the country, and it anchors this region. That means Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego in the south, Santa Barbara and Montecito along the coast, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the wine country weddings of Napa, Sonoma, and Temecula. Between the two halves of the state sit some of the most painted stretches of coastline in America, from Malibu up through Big Sur, Carmel, and Monterey.
Beyond California, the region runs north through Portland, the Columbia River Gorge, and Seattle in the Pacific Northwest, and inland to Palm Springs, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, and the desert settings of Scottsdale and Sedona. Most of the market sits along one long coastal corridor, so artists here are used to travelling for the right wedding, with costs quoted upfront. If your city isn't named here, enquire anyway and we'll tell you honestly who can get there and what the travel adds.
More than anywhere else in the US, West Coast weddings happen outdoors, and that suits live painting unusually well, since the artist is working in natural light with the landscape as part of the subject. Vineyard weddings in Napa and Sonoma give a painter rows of vines, golden light, and mountains behind the ceremony. Big Sur and the Malibu coast put the Pacific in the background of the canvas. Palm Springs brings mid-century architecture and desert color, while the Pacific Northwest offers forest and waterfront settings that feel like nowhere else in the country. When you brief your artist, the setting is as much a part of the conversation as the two of you, since out here it often fills most of the painting.
West Coast pricing follows the national pattern: most live wedding painters charge between $2,000 and $6,500, with the typical booking around $3,500 for a 16x20 inch canvas and four to six hours of painting, travel billed separately. Expect the top of that range in California's luxury markets, particularly Napa, Montecito, and Big Sur, where demand for experienced painters runs highest. Because the region stretches over a thousand miles from San Diego to Seattle, an artist based near your venue will usually beat a cheaper artist travelling the length of the coast once travel is included. Our full US cost breakdown covers the other pricing factors in detail.
The West Coast season is the longest in the country. Coastal California runs reliably from April through November, with September and October the most contested months in wine country. The Pacific Northwest concentrates into a shorter dry window from July through September, when Saturdays go fastest. Palm Springs and the desert flip the calendar, peaking from October through April when the summer heat breaks. Established painters in the major markets book 12 to 24 months out for peak dates, so if your date is set, an early enquiry costs nothing and protects your options.
We also list live wedding painters covering the East Coast and the Central states, and many of our artists will travel between regions for the right wedding. Marrying abroad? Several of our UK and European artists take on destination weddings.
We're actively building our roster across California, the Pacific Northwest, and the desert Southwest. If you're a professional live painter in the region, apply to join the platform and reach couples searching for exactly what you do.
