How Much Does a Live Wedding Painter Cost in the USA? (2026)

A live wedding painter in the US costs from $1,500 to $5,000 to start. That is the price of each artist’s smallest package on TheWeddingPainters. We checked every price on October 8, 2026. Half of our 10 US artists start below $2,800.

The starting price does not include travel. When you reach out, your artist sends a quote made just for your wedding. That quote adds their travel, and a hotel if they need one. So your final price depends on where you marry and what you would like painted.

All prices in this guide come from our own artist pages, in US dollars. Planning a wedding in the UK? Our UK price guide shows prices in pounds.

Four artists start under $2,000. Two start at $3,500 or more. Each artist also marks one package as their most popular. For nine of the ten, that package costs between $2,400 and $4,500.

Size is a good way to compare. Seven artists use a 16×20 inch canvas for their smallest package. Even so, their prices start anywhere from $1,500 to $3,500. The same size painting can cost twice as much. It depends on the artist, the paint, and how much finishing work is included.

These are the starting prices artists show on their pages. They are not the average price couples paid. We will update this table when artists join or change their prices.

Your starting price vs. your final quote

The starting price is an artist’s smallest package, before travel. Your final quote is often higher. There are three main reasons. The artist may need to travel to you. You may want a bigger painting or more people in it. And you may add extras.

Travel makes the biggest difference. Our US artists travel to the weddings they paint. Most live a few hours’ drive or a short flight away. Your quote will include their travel, and a hotel if they need one. For example, Alexandra includes travel within 50 miles of her home in Appleton, Wisconsin. If you are further away, she adds the cost of flights, a hotel and a rental car.

Each artist lists their extras on their page, such as extra people, pets and framing. Rachel adds a gold frame and a print to her two bigger packages. Aeron and Tracy can also paint a ceremony backdrop or seating chart, from $1,000.

The easiest way to get a true price is to ask. Send your date, your venue and the moment you want painted. Your artist can change the quote as many times as you like.

    What changes the price

Seven things change the price the most. They are canvas size, extra people or pets, hours at your wedding, travel, finishing time, the type of paint, and the artist’s experience. Each artist weighs these in their own way.

    Canvas size and detail

A bigger canvas costs more, but it also gives the artist more room for detail. Faces, dresses, flowers and the venue can all be painted more finely. A small canvas has less space, so fine details have to be simpler. If detail matters most to you, choose a bigger size.

Here is how size changes the price. Ryan charges $1,800 for a 16×20, $2,400 for an 18×24 and $3,100 for a 24×30. Alexandra in The Woodlands charges from $3,500 for a 16×20 up to $6,000 for a 24×36.

Adding people, pets and loved ones

You can ask your artist to add more to the scene. That could be family, friends, a pet, or a loved one who has passed away. These are usually extra. Mabel charges from $150 for each extra person and from $50 for each pet. Aeron and Tracy charge $3,200 for the two of you. Up to six people costs $4,000, and up to eight costs $4,400. For ideas, see our guide to honoring a loved one at your wedding.

    Hours at your wedding

Most of the smallest packages include four to eight hours of painting. Hana paints for four hours or more. Alexandra in Appleton paints for five to seven, and Mabel for six to eight. Some artists add hours as the canvas gets bigger. To see how it all fits into your day, read what happens on the day with a live wedding painter.

    Travel

Every artist on this list travels to weddings. An artist who lives near your venue spends less on flights and hotels. So a nearby artist with a higher price can cost about the same as one who has to fly. Also, if you cancel, some artists keep the cost of flights they have already booked.

Finished on the day, or in the studio

Aeron and Tracy are the only US artists on this list who finish the whole painting at your wedding. Most others show you the painting that evening. Then they take it to their studio to add the final details. Anton spends one to two more weeks on it. Lauren delivers within two weeks. Rachel ships within two to four weeks. With Rachel, you can also plan ahead to take it home that night.

    Oil or acrylic paint

Four artists on this list paint with oil, and four use acrylic. The oil painters start at $1,800 to $5,000. The acrylic painters start at $1,500 to $3,500. Acrylic paint dries fast, so more of the work can be done on the night. Oil paint dries slowly, so it is often finished in the studio. Neither one is better. Choose the look you love most.

    The artist’s experience

Experience can affect price, but not always in the way you might think. Hana has painted for about a year and starts at $1,800. Johnna has more than 20 years of practice and starts at $3,300. Anton trained in classic oil painting and starts at $5,000. But Alexandra in Appleton has painted for more than 10 years and starts at $1,500. So look at each artist’s paintings and reviews, not just the price. Our questions to ask before hiring a live wedding painter can help on your first call.

    Deposits and payment

A deposit holds your date. Eight of our ten artists ask for 25% of the price as a deposit. Two ask for 50%. Most collect the rest 30 days before your wedding. On a $3,000 package, that is a $750 deposit at 25%, or $1,500 at 50%.

You pay through TheWeddingPainters, so your booking and payments stay together in one place. Each artist sets their own rules for cancelling. You can read them on the artist’s page before you pay.

    Prices by region

Starting prices are about the same across the country. That is because most of our US artists travel nationwide. What changes is the cost of travel in your quote.

New York. Our New York live wedding painters paint across New York City, the Hudson Valley, Westchester, Long Island and the Hamptons. Their prices start at $1,500 to $5,000. The same artists also paint in New Jersey. You can see everyone on the East Coast too.

Central USA. Our Central USA live wedding painters cover the middle of the country. That runs from Chicago and Minneapolis down to Texas, Nashville and New Orleans. Cities are further apart here, so keep an eye on travel costs.

West Coast. Our West Coast live wedding painters cover California up to the Pacific Northwest. Ryan, Lauren, and Aeron and Tracy all live in Southern California.

    Live painting or guest portraits?

A guest illustrator draws or paints quick portraits of your guests. Each guest takes one home as a gift. Our three US guest illustrators start at $2,500 to $2,550. That is about the same as a live painting. Two of them, Mabel and Rachel, also offer live wedding paintings. To see which suits your day, read the difference between live wedding painters and wedding illustrators.

    When to book

The most popular dates book up first. Our US artists are few and hand-picked, so popular Saturdays can go months ahead. It costs nothing to ask, and you do not commit until you pay a deposit. So reach out as soon as you know your date and venue. Our guide on how far in advance to book a live wedding painter has more tips.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a live wedding painter cost in the US?

On TheWeddingPainters, US live wedding painters start at $1,500 to $5,000, before travel. Half of our artists start below $2,800. Bigger paintings with more people usually cost $2,400 to $6,000. One artist offers packages up to $15,000. We checked these prices on October 8, 2026.

Does the starting price include travel?

No. But your quote will include travel, plus a hotel if your artist needs one. You will see the full price before you book.

Is a bigger canvas worth it?

It depends on what you want to see. A bigger canvas costs more, but it gives the artist room for finer detail. A 16×20 is a good size for just the two of you. An 18×24 or bigger leaves room for more detail, and for your venue and guests too. Your artist can help you choose.

Can we take the painting home on the night?

Usually, you see the painting that evening. Then the artist finishes it in their studio and sends it to you in one to eight weeks. Want it that night? Choose an artist who finishes on the day, or ask about same-day pickup.

Is a live wedding painter worth it?

For many couples, yes. Your guests get to watch a painting come to life. You get a piece of art from your day to keep forever. To help you decide, read Is a live wedding painter worth it? and reasons to have a live wedding painter at your wedding.
