Wedding Painting Styles: Find the Style That Feels Like Yours

In short, there are five main styles of wedding painting: Old Masters / Classical, Realistic, Romantic & Soft, Impressionistic & Expressive and Vibrant. Old Masters suits candlelit, historic venues and a painting that feels like an heirloom. Realistic suits couples who want every face and detail exactly as it was. Romantic & Soft suits gentle light and blush tones, Impressionistic & Expressive suits the feeling of the day, and Vibrant suits bold colour and a celebration. If you are not sure, start with your venue and your flowers, and use the quick match near the end.

Every artist paints love differently. Some wedding paintings look as though they have hung in a country house for centuries. Others glow with summer colour, or catch the music and movement of the dance floor. There is no right answer, only the one that feels like you.

To use this guide, flick through the five styles and notice which one makes you stop. Read the “feels like you” paragraph to see whether it suits your day, then follow the links to the artists who paint in that style. The artists named here are independent artists on The Wedding Painters, and the prices are the “from” prices on their listings, checked on 19 October 2026.

Old Masters / Classical: rich oils and candlelit warmth

Rich oils, deep shadow and candlelit warmth, an heirloom from day one.

Is Old Masters / Classical the style for you?

It feels like you if your venue has history, such as a church, castle, country house or grand hall. It also suits you if you are drawn to candlelight, dark wood, gilt and deep, warm colours, and you want a painting that looks as though it has always belonged on your wall.

    What to expect

Warm, layered tones and deep shadows, with light that seems to glow from within. Faces are softly modelled and recognisable, and the setting is painted with as much care as the two of you, so the room becomes part of the story. It feels as though it has been in the family for generations.

Old Masters / Classical artists to look at

Jacob is based in Shropshire and paints live in oils in an Old Masters / Classical and Impressionistic & Expressive style. His live wedding painting packages start at £2,200, and framing and UK shipping are included. In the US, Anton paints live oils in the Old Masters tradition from $5,000. You can meet more Old Masters / Classical artists on the platform.

Realistic: every face and every detail

Every face, every detail, exactly as it was.

Is Realistic the style for you?

It feels like you if you want to look at the painting in twenty years and see exactly who you were that day. It also suits you if the details matter to you, such as the lace on your dress, the flowers you chose and the venue you fell in love with, and if you would love to include the ones who matter most, four-legged guests included.

    What to expect

Faces true to life and instantly recognisable, with fabric, flowers and light all painted with care. Colours stay natural, just as you saw them, yet it is still unmistakably a painting rather than a photograph. Much of the finest detail is added in the studio afterwards, so the painting that comes home is even more refined than the one revealed on the night.

    Realistic artists to look at

For a realistic portrait painted in the studio, Amber paints realistic oil portraits from £500, and Jacob’s studio commissions include a Detailed Couple Paintings option from £1,950 that focuses on emotion, expressions and setting. You can meet more Realistic artists on the platform, and our guide to how to commission a wedding portrait painting explains how a commission works.

Romantic & Soft: gentle light and blush tones

Gentle light and blush tones, like a memory held close.

Is Romantic & Soft the style for you?

It feels like you if your wedding is all garden roses, soft florals and golden-hour light. It also suits you if you are drawn to blush, ivory, sage and pale gold more than bold colour, and you want the painting to capture how the day felt more than every exact detail.

    What to expect

Soft edges, delicate washes of colour and light that seems to glow, sometimes finished with fine touches of lace or gold leaf. Faces are gentle and recognisable, and backgrounds melt away so the two of you are at the heart of it. It feels tender and intimate, more like a memory than a record.

Romantic & Soft artists to look at

Krystyna is based in London and paints romantic, storytelling live wedding paintings, with packages from £1,299. Her Bronze package includes a 46 x 36cm gallery-wrapped canvas and about six hours of live painting, finished and varnished by the end of the night. Amy is based in Liverpool and paints live with a focus on the couple’s bond, with packages from £800 that end in an evening reveal. You can meet more Romantic & Soft artists on the platform.

Impressionistic & Expressive: loose, luminous brushwork

Loose, luminous brushwork, all feeling and atmosphere.

Is Impressionistic & Expressive the style for you?

It feels like you if you remember your day as a feeling: the music, the light and the buzz of the room. It also suits you if you love art that could hang in a gallery and not just record the day, and if your day has drama, such as golden hour, a sparkler exit or a first dance in the clouds.

    What to expect

Bold, visible brushstrokes and light that shimmers across the canvas. Detail gives way to movement and colour, so faces are suggested rather than traced, and the whole scene feels alive. It is the closest thing to how the day felt in the moment.

Impressionistic & Expressive artists to look at

Amy paints quickly and impressionistically in acrylics and oils, and her live packages start at £800. If you would rather have a studio piece, Jacob’s studio commissions include an Impressionistic Moments option from £1,950 that is soft and dreamy and focuses on mood and setting. In the US, Ryan paints impressionistic oils from $1,800. You can meet more Impressionistic & Expressive artists on the platform.

    Vibrant: bold colour and energy

[image: Painting of a bride and groom embracing on a tree-lined path, with pink and blue flowers behind them]

Bold colour and energy, as joyful as the day itself.

Is Vibrant the style for you?

It feels like you if your wedding is full of colour, with bright florals, a summer sky or a suit that is not navy. It also suits you if you want the painting to feel like a celebration and not a still life, and you would rather it brought a room to life than blended quietly into it.

    What to expect

Rich colour, bright light and confident brushwork, with flowers and skies that seem to glow. Faces stay true to life, but the energy of the day leads. It is a painting that makes you smile every time you walk past it.

    Vibrant artists to look at

Alice is based in London and paints live in oils in a Vibrant & Modern style, with packages from £995. She arrives at least two hours before the ceremony or reception to begin the background, paints through the day and holds an evening reveal. In the US, Ryan paints impressionistic oils with rich, vibrant colour from $1,800. You can meet more Vibrant artists on the platform.

Not sure yet? Match the style to your day

Picture your venue, your flowers and the feel of the day, then find the line that sounds most like you. If your day is a church, castle or country house lit by candlelight, try Old Masters / Classical. If it is all about the details, such as the lace, the flowers and every face, try Realistic. If it is garden roses, blush tones and golden-hour light, try Romantic & Soft. If it is music, movement and a dance floor that never empties, try Impressionistic & Expressive. If it is bright florals, summer sun and a celebration of colour, try Vibrant.

Some days sit between two styles. A destination wedding by the sea suits Realistic or Vibrant. An evening reception, all candles and atmosphere, suits Old Masters or Impressionistic. A rustic barn strung with fairy lights suits Romantic & Soft or Vibrant. A city venue with modern styling suits Vibrant or Impressionistic.

    Torn between two styles?

When you message an artist, tell them which paintings in this guide you love. It is the quickest way to know whether their style is right for your day. Some artists also work across two styles. Jacob, for example, lists both Old Masters / Classical and Impressionistic & Expressive on his live painting listing.

Live painting or a studio commission?

Many artists offer live painting at your wedding, a studio commission painted from your wedding photographs, or both, so check each listing. A live painting is made on the day while your guests watch, and some live painters finish the piece away from the venue afterwards. Krystyna’s Bronze package is finished and varnished by the end of the night, while Alice refines the finer details in the studio and delivers the finished painting within four weeks. Anton’s studio finishing takes one to two weeks. If you chose Realistic, expect more of the finest detail to be added in the studio.

A studio commission is painted from your photographs, so the style is chosen from the artist’s portfolio and listing. Our portrait commissions page shows commissions from £450 to £3,000 (checked on 13 October 2026), and our guide to what happens on the day with a live wedding painter explains the live option step by step. If you are in the US, the US studio commissions page is the place to start.
